Mauritius: A New National Development Strategy

An integrated Planning Study to update the 1992 National Physical Development Plan for the Republic of Mauritius and Rodrigues (combined population of some 1.3m).

The National Development Strategy considered four key components; 1 - the declining profitability of the once "king" sugar industry; 2 - the rising population (and associated issues surrounding car ownership and congestion, and density); 3- poorly controlled urban growth; and 4 - tourism diversification.

Key detailed Planning and Urban Design Guidance was also prepared for: Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Integrated Resorts and Hotels, alongside the review of seven separate Outline Planning (Local Plans) Schemes, detailed Action Area Plans and legislative/institutional change (national, strategic and district capabilities).
