Historic Bund Regeneration

The Bund, facing the mighty Huangpu river in central Shanghai, is one of the world's most famous and important waterfront promenades. It houses world class heritage builings of various architectural styles - neo classical, baroque and beaux arts. In the early 20th Century the Bund was the international district of Shanghai but after years of urban decline China's "Open Door" policy enabled the resurgence of this magnificent historic riverfront area.

The Bund Regeneration Master Plan establishes a balance between the unprecedented growth seen on the other side of the Huangpu River in Pudong and the complimentary conservation and regeneration of the historic Bund. Within a masterpiece heritage area, a 21st Century Central Business District is created providing economic diversity, a high quality envronment for a multi-cultural cosmopolitan population and a stronger "sense of place" that continues to captivate the world.

Through careful upgrading, building refurbishment, and new infill the Bund Regeneration Master Plan paves the way for a sensitive and sustainable uplift, whilst creating oportunities for new business - multi-national firms, financial institutions, service industries, and tourism activities.

The Master Plan creates an international Central Business District with "Shanghainese Characteristics" reflecting historic layout, building forms, spatial diversity and socio-cultural legacy.

The Master Plan won first prize in this international design competition.
